A farm worker has died after being crushed by hay bales on an Australian farm when he was crushed by a hay bale.

Paramedics were called to a property at Greendale an hour west of Melbourne around 4pm to treat a man, 64, who was injured while working.

It is understood he was badly hurt after multiple hay bales fell on him. 

He later died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the freak accident.

Victorian police remain on the scene, although the man’s death is not being treated as suspicious, 9News reported.

Farming and agricultural workers are continually in the top 10 most dangerous types of work in Australia.

Hay bales can weigh between 350kg and 700kg.
