The family of Perth grandmother Donna Nelson, who is in a Tokyo prison, say they have spoken to Foreign Minister Penny Wong.

Nelson recently had her trial unexpected postponed after already spending 18 months in prison on drug smuggling charges that she denies.

Her family said their conversation with Wong lasted about half an hour, and the minister was “empathetic and generous with her time”.

Perth grandmother Donna Nelson was arrested at Tokyo's Narita Airport on January 4.

”My thoughts are with Ms Nelson and her family as they await her trial in Tokyo,” Wong said in a statement to 9News after the conversation with her family.

“We are also making representations to the Japanese government about her welfare and the legal proceedings.”

The only family member allowed to visit Nelson in prison is her three-year-old granddaughter.

Nelson’s family said it was the one thing keeping her spirits up as she awaits the next step in the case.
