A Perth Hills family is grieving after an eight-year-old boy fell from a moving car and died.

9News understands his siblings and father were also in the car as it drove along a gravel road in Mount Helena, roughly 40 kilometres east of Perth, about 4pm (6pm AEST) yesterday.

Major crash investigators are trying to work out exactly how the accident unfolded.

The child suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby home, where he was met by emergency services.

St John Ambulance rushed him to hospital, but he couldn’t be saved. Today, the police commissioner was asked if the incident was being treated as suspicious.

Police Commissioner Col Blanch said it was a “terrible, terribly sad story”.

Asked whether the death was so suspicious he said it was too early to tell for certain.

“I don’t believe so [based on] early indications but let’s keep an open mind,” he said.
