An explosion has sparked a major factory fire, which is sending plumes of black smoke over Melbourne’s west.

Emergency services were called to Swann Drive in Derrimut about 11.20am today.

About 49 firefighter trucks are responding to the out-of-control blaze.

“At this time there have been no reports of injuries and it is believed everyone inside the premises evacuated safely,” police said.

Traffic in the area is expected to be impacted with Swann Drive closed as well as westbound traffic on the Deer Park bypass being stopped for safety.

Nearby suburbs – Albion, Braybrook, Brooklyn, Derrimut, Laverton North, Sunshine, Sunshine West, Tottenham and Truganina – were advised to stay informed.

“There is currently no threat to the community, but you should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions,” Victoria Emergency said.
