Ex-Giant Kadarius Toney set for NFL return with Browns after failed Chiefs tenure

Welcome back, Kadarius Toney.

The two-time Super Bowl-winning wide receiver, who had been waiting as a member of the Browns’ practice squad since September.

He was elevated off the practice squad Saturday and is expected to make his season debut when Cleveland travels to New Orleans on Sunday.

Toney, 25, most recently played for the Chiefs.

He landed in Kansas City in 2022 after the Giants dealt him for a third and sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Over one-and-a-half partial seasons with Patrick Mahomes and company, Toney appeared in 20 contests, caught 41 of 55 targets, and racked up 340 yards and three touchdowns.

Chiefs fans will remember Toney most fondly for his heroics in the 2023 Super Bowl.

A key punt return and a receiving touchdown helped Kansas City to their third world championship in franchise history.

That was as good as it would get for Toney with the Chiefs.

In August 2024, the Chiefs waived him from the roster ahead of Week 1 following a 2023 season plagued with dropped passes.

He did not play after Week 15.

Toney began his career in New York in 2021 when the Giants selected him with the No. 21 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Alabama native played in only 12 of 24 games during his first two seasons with the Giants, in part, because of a nagging hamstring injury.

As a member of the Browns’ practice squad, Toney’s reps had been limited because of an undisclosed injury.

His reps have increased steadily in recent weeks though, and now, because of injuries to other rostered players including rookie defensive tackle Mike Hall Jr., Toney will get his shot with the regular squad.

Toney will join a talented wide receiver room in Cleveland, vying for quarterback Jameis Winston’s attention with fellow wideouts Jerry Jeudy, Cedric Tillman and Elijah Moore, among others.

Tight end David Njoku has also seen his target share increase in recent weeks.

Kickoff between the Browns (2-7) and Saints (3-7) is scheduled for 1 p.m. in New Orleans.
