Evie Butterworth accused of being under the influence of multiple drugs, driving car in fatal crash

A young woman accused of driving almost 100km/h over the speed limit sparking a fatal crash was also under the influence of multiple drugs, a court heard.

Evie Lyn Butterworth, 29, was allegedly driving the Nissan Maxima which collided with Abbey Sheriff’s Nissan X-Trail on Perth’s Kwinana Freeway just before midnight on January 11. 

Ms Sheriff, 21, died at the scene after the collision sent her vehicle flying onto a bike path near Baldivis. 

Ms Butterworth On Thursday, appeared in Perth Magistrates Court where she was charged with manslaughter and driving a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs.

Police allege she was affected by a cocktail of different drugs with traces of cocaine, cannabis and methamphetamine all found in her system.

Prosecutors also accused Ms Butterworth of driving between 141km/h and 188km/h on the 80km/h freeway.

She spent Wednesday night in custody after her arrest and appeared before the court with Magistrate Huston granting the accused bail of $50 000.

The bail includes conditions that state Ms Butterworth is to live with her parents, regularly report to police and is required to undergo urinalysis.

In granting her bail, Magistrate Richard Huston said he was ‘very mindful’ that a fatality had been involved in the alleged offending, which he described as ‘incredibly tragic’, ABC News reported. 

However, he noted that everyone was entitled to the presumption of innocence, which was a fundamental principle of the justice system.

Ms Sheriff suffered multiple injuries after her vehicle rolled three times on impact and could not be saved, police told the court.

The 21-year-old was on her way to a friend’s house on the night of the crash and had only recently bought her car.

Ms Sheriff’s parents have set up a Facebook page in memoriam of ‘our beautiful daughter Abbey Rose’.

‘Abbey was our only child,’ the post read, ‘we have had 10 failed pregnancies and we fought so hard to bring her into this world and to have her taken away from us…’ 

Ms Butterworth is due back in court at the end of the month.
