A mother-of-five allegedly murdered by her estranged husband in a home in Sydney‘s south-west was killed with a homemade spear, a court has heard.

Police alleged in court today that Talaat Hawatt, 35, killed his estranged wife Khouloud Hawatt, 31, in their unit in Belmore.

Ms Hawatt was found dead inside an apartment on Knox Street early yesterday morning after a family member contacted police with an urgent concern for welfare call.

Court documents revealed in Bankstown Local Court today show police had taken out an apprehended domestic violence order (ADVO) in February for Ms Hawatt’s protection.

Mr Hawatt was ordered to stay away from his wife and was only allowed to communicate with her through a lawyer.

Court documents showed that in April, Mr Hawatt asked to have the ADVO watered down so he could move back home following the birth of the couple’s fifth child.

Despite concerns from police, the ADVO was changed in Bankstown Local Court in August.

Less than four months later, Ms Hawatt was allegedly killed by her husband.

Mr Hawatt was charged overnight with murder, contravening an ADVO and using a prohibited weapon.

The accused’s solicitor Mostafa Daoudie called the case “tragic”.

“The circumstances of this event are very tragic … we won’t be making any comment at this stage,” Daoudie said.

Friends remembered Ms Hawatt as a good mother to her five children, all of whom are under the age of eight.

“This woman was a pure woman, she’s a pure soul … a great mother and a great wife,” Mohamed Saar said.
