Horror start to Easter weekend as four people are killed in two-car smash – as major highway is closed in both directions

Four people have died and another taken to hospital following a tragic two-car crash at about 6:45am on Friday.

Emergency services have been urged Easter travellers to avoid the Barton Highway between New South Wales’ Murrumbatemanr and Canberra.

The highway has been closed in both directions since around 7am. 

Upon arriving at the scene, NSW Police found a Ford Ranger utility and a Mitsubishi Triton utility had collided.

‘The female driver and male passenger of the Mitsubishi, and a male driver and male passenger in the Ford died at the scene,’ a statement from NSW Police reads.

‘They have not been formally identified.’

Another male passenger of the Ford was treated by NSW Ambulance at the scene and has been taken to hospital in an unknown condition.

A crime scene has been established and Police are conducting investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

As inquiries continue, anyone with dashcam vision or further information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

ACT emergency services are reporting that it ‘may be some time’ before the highway can be re-opened.
