Twenty-two people have been arrested and dozens of weapons have been seized in a crackdown by Victoria Police.

Two handguns, a pen pistol, ammunition, knives, machetes and knuckle dusters were removed from Melbourne streets this week in the three-day-long Operation Broom.

Homes in Melton and Deer Park were searched in the investigation. Watergardens train station and shopping centre were also targeted by police.

Police said 45 people were hit with infringement notices for weapons and traffic offences, while a further 22 were arrested. 

The sting was aimed at alleged dangerous armed offenders in Melbourne’s north-west. 

“We want to send the message that we are out and about and we will hold those people accountable,” Brimbank Local Area Commander Acting Inspector Pat Cantone told 9News.

“The consequences of carrying these weapons where they’re making a split a second decision … are just terrible for everyone involved.”

Victoria Police will focus attention on a second suburb in Melbourne’s north-west once the operation wraps up.
