Dozens of school children have been rescued from a boat after it caught fire in Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay this morning.

Dianne told 3AW's Tom Elliott the ferry she was onboard was forced to detour after receiving reports of the burning boat.

"It looks like there's about 30 children who have life jackets," she said.
