Former US President and Republican nominee Donald Trump has reacted promptly to President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 election, saying his former opponent was “not fit to run”.
Trump issued a statement on his Truth Social network writing, “Crooked Joe Biden was not fit to run for President, and is certainly not fit to serve – And never was!”
He continued, “All those around him, including his Doctor and the Media, knew that he wasn’t capable of being President, and he wasn’t”.
Trump, who was greeted as a returning hero at last week’s Republican National Convention after surviving a shooting, continued with some of his familiar campaigning points.
“And now, look what he’s done to our Country, with millions of people coming across our Border, totally unchecked and unvetted, many from prisons, mental institutions, and record numbers of terrorists.”
“We will suffer greatly because of his presidency, but we will remedy the damage he has done very quickly. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Earlier on Sunday (Monday AEST) Biden announced he will drop out of the 2024 presidential race, ahead of the November US election.
He immediately announced his support for Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Party’s nominee.
Calls had grown for Biden to step aside after numerous blunders following his debate with Trump last month.
Minutes later, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to take his place as Democratic presidential candidate.
Fellow Democrats have been quick to praise his “selfless” decision. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has called for him to resign immediately.
