It is understood the 37-year-old was taking his dog for a drink of water at a Bloomfield boat ramp, north of Port Douglas, when a croc suddenly lunged from the water and took “a large bite” out of his leg at 5.30pm.

The animal is believed to have then dragged the man into the Bloomfield River before he was able to escape to land.

He was flown to Cairns for emergency treatment where he is believed to now be in a stable condition in hospital.
