A dingo has been stabbed after it attacked a nine-year-old boy on K'gari (stock)

A dingo has been violently stabbed after it attacked a nine-year-old boy on K’gari, formerly Fraser Island.

The child was bitten on the underarm near the Fraser Island beach track at 11.47am on Friday.

The dingo was stabbed during an altercation between it and a bystander, who intervened to protect the young boy.

Initial reports from the Queensland Department of Environment and Science and Innovation (DESI) said that the dingo had died after being stabbed.

However, they later said it was just severely wounded and ‘not in a good way’.

DESI said that a search for the dingo is now underway.

In a statement to Daily Mail Australia, Queensland Ambulance Service confirmed the nine-year-old is in a stable condition.

He was taken to Hervey Bay Hospital via Marine Rescue Queensland on Friday afternoon.

K’gari made headlines earlier this year following a series of dingo-related incidents, including one in April where a woman was bitten.

According to DESI, the woman had been walking from the camping area to the beach.

A dingo lunged at her, biting her hands and leaving deep gashes on her fingers.

DESI had previously advised campers to carry a stick for protection while on the island.

In response to ongoing issues, additional ranger patrols were also scheduled.

The April attack was part of a pattern of recent dingo encounters.

In January, a two-year-old child was bitten on the leg by a dingo during the Australia Day long weekend.

Another woman was bitten at Lake McKenzie during the same period.

21 dingo-related incidents were reported on K'Gari in 2024

Earlier that month, a three-year-old girl was attacked at Kingfisher Bay.

She suffered a bite to the back of her leg from a dingo that had been tagged.

In 2024, at least 21 dingo-related incidents had been reported on the island.

Queensland Police confirmed they were not involved in the latest matter.
