An immigration detainee believed to be released last year has appeared in court after allegedly flouting curfew restrictions and tampering with his ankle bracelet.
Kimbengere Gosoge, 42, faced Midland Court in Perth today.
Police alleged he breached conditions of his visa between Friday last week and yesterday.
They also claimed the man from the East African country of Burundi tampered with his ankle-monitoring device.
He is believed to have been released from immigration detention under a High Court ruling in November.
If convicted, the 42-year-old could face maximum penalties of five years jail and a $94,000 fine.
He’ll be back in court in two weeks.
Dozens of detainees held by the Australian government were released last year after the High Court ruled indefinite detention was illegal.
The government, which opposed the ruling in court, was forced to pass curfew and monitoring laws in response.
