Demi Lovato’s Sister Madison De La Garza Felt ‘Disconnected’ From Her Mom Before Sobriety Journey

Madison De La Garza feels brand new following her uphill battle with addictions! The entertainer is best known as the younger half-sister of Disney’s sweetheart Demi Lovato.

Instead of living inside her sibling’s shadow, the 21-year-old made a name for herself in Hollywood as a child actress.

However, the TV personality battled the same demons as the “Confident” singer, getting trapped in the dark world of substance abuse. Fortunately, the “Desperate Housewives” star broke free and recently got candid about her emotional journey.

Celebrity life is not for the fainthearted, and it is more challenging for those who found fame at a young age. In a heart-to-heart discussion with E! News, De La Garza reflected on the trials and tribulations she faced while growing up in the spotlight.

According to the TV personality, she was “248 days into her journey of recovery,” a trip she did not embrace until she realized a change was necessary for her survival. “I went through a lot of things last year that made me want to stay in bed, made me want to hide from the world,” the 21-year-old confessed. “My best friend was substances, and it disconnected me from those around me.”

“When I realized it started to affect my relationship with not only my friends but specifically my relationship with my mom, that’s when I knew I had to make a change,” the Dallas native explained.

Fixing her relationship with her mom, Dianna De La Garza, was crucial to the “Pink Elephant” codirector’s wellness plan. She described the former country singer as her “best friend” and noted: “she’s my everything. I would do anything for her.”

Finally free from her dark past, the filmmaker shared how sobriety had impacted her life. “I feel free. The world seems lighter and more colorful,” the media personality gushed.

De La Garza admitted that “things are easier,” opening up about her recent trip to the Big Apple. “I just took a trip to New York, and I wasn’t panicking because I was tied down to a substance,” the sober entertainer shared. “I wasn’t thinking, ‘Oh, what if I can’t use this? What if I don’t have my crutch?’”

Given the benefits of embracing a substance-free existence, the “Gnome Alone” voice actress revealed that she inspired others in similar situations. In the TV personality’s words:

“I have been helping people who are going through the same thing as I have. I have a lot of friends who looked to me and said, ‘Hey, I’m gonna go get help, because I saw that you got help, and it changed your life. And I want that freedom that you have.’”

The Dallas beauty also credits her sobriety journey to her big half-sister, whom she praised for being open about their struggles with addictions and mental health. “She obviously gives me a lot of great sister advice,” the entertainer said about the “Heart Attack” singer.

“But I think it’s more powerful to see her in action,” the media personality continued. “I’ve started to share my personal story, and I would have never, ever, ever done that if it wasn’t for her. Her honesty, her bravery, and being an open book, I think that is what drives me.”

In the video, the 21-year-old played herself and her ancestor, whom she spoke to about her substance-free life. When her foremother asked how long she had gone without succumbing to her addictions, the Dallas native proudly replied, “230 days.”
