Dax Shepard had a very candid conversation with Ike Barinholtz about being naked around his children.
The Running Point co-creator, 48, was a guest on Shepard’s, 50, Armchair Expert podcast on Monday, with the two sharing stories of how their families handle nudity.
Shepard is a dad to daughters Lincoln, 11, and Delta, 10, with actress Kristen Bell, 44. Meanwhile Barinholtz shares three daughters — Foster, 11, Payton, eight, and his youngest, five, whose name has not yet been revealed — with wife Erica Hanson.
Shepard — who previously said he helps his daughter shave her legs — defended a ‘European’ approach to nudity, and revealed that his daughter once made a joke about his ‘old’ private parts.
‘You know, our older daughter asks why do you and Daddy’s birds — it’s universal in my house, it can be male or female — why do you and Daddy’s birds look so old?’
Barinholtz then laughed that it was the right moment to Google ‘d**k lift Los Angeles.’

Shepard clarified that the discussion involved his wife, not him, and that he was uncertain if it was his testicles that provoked the question.
‘It’s the testicles,’ Barinholtz confirmed.
The conversation kicked off after Shepard shared how he wanted to show his daughter Delta her mom’s movie, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but had to turn it off due to nude scenes.
‘We’re not hung up on nudity in my family,’ Shepard explained, but as the movie continues, he came to the conclusion, ‘No, I don’t think this is the right film for us.’
‘I wish we weren’t hung up on nudity,’ Barinholtz then shared, as he recalled an anecdote about his daughter walking in on him in the bathroom.
‘My 11-year-old, who’s going on 15, she’ll come into my bathroom when I’m coming out of my shower and will look at me and go, “Ugh.”‘
‘And I’m like, “What are we doing? Why are you doing this?” This is so mean.’
Shepard chimed in: ‘I don’t go into your bathroom and evaluate your body.’
The two agreed that it’s best for parents to stop being naked around kids when they hit puberty, but Shepard added, ‘My policy is that they’ll decide that, because in Europe they don’t give a f**k.’

Barinholtz went on to say that when he showers with his youngest daughter in a hotel, he wears underwear due to the height difference between them. ‘They’re nude, they go to dinner nude,’ Barinholtz said, as Shepard added, ‘I’m aiming for that.’
Barinholtz went on to say that when he showers with his youngest daughter in a hotel, he wears underwear due to the height difference between them.
While the American Academy of Pediatrics offers no specific advice on family nudity, in 2018 clinical psychologist John E. Mayer cited studies indicating that nudity should end when one person is no longer comfortable, in a 2018 interview with Yahoo Life.
Last year, Shepard revealed that he helps shave his daughter Lincoln’s legs, after she shaved his back for him.
Shepard explained on his podcast, ‘I discovered I had all this back hair from the backlighting of the gym.’
‘I was saying it out loud to my family, and Lincoln said, “Do you want me to shave your back?” Which I think is a dirty job. I would have never asked her to shave my back.’
Dax then continued, ‘But she offered, and I shave her legs for her.’
In 2024 Dax and Kristen faced scrutiny online over letting their two daughters roam around a Danish theme park for seven hours during a family vacation to Copenhagen.

Bell revealed how she and Shepard took a hands-off approach to parenting as they allowed their two girls to wander the Tivoli Gardens amusement park without supervision.
‘We stayed at this hotel that was right at Tivoli Gardens. The hotel opens up into the theme park and so we just were kind of like, “Are we going to free-range parenting and roll the dice here?”’ she told Jimmy Kimmel.
‘So they woke up at like 6am every morning and scanned their bracelets to go outside. We didn’t see them for seven hours. They were just running around Copenhagen.’
‘And that was ok?’ Kimmel asked Bell with a laugh.
‘Apparently, they’re both alive, we all returned home,’ she quipped.
The actress said the freedom she and Shepard experienced as parents was ‘heaven.’
In 2022, she told how their girls had finally moved out of their parents’ bedroom and into their own shared room.
In an interview with E! News, the Veronica Mars star said the girls have ‘graduated’ from the tri-fold mattress they were sleeping on in their parents’ room and are now tucked away in their own beds.

The revelation that the entire family had been sharing one room sparked quite a discussion when the pair discussed it on his Armchair Expert podcast.
In 2018, Bell caused further controversy when she revealed to Parents Magazine they would lock their then three-year-old in her room when she wouldn’t go to bed.
‘I’m sorry, I know that’s controversial, but we lock it when she gets in there, and we stand outside and say, ‘We love you, we will talk to you in the morning, but now, it’s time for sleep.’ And after about 10 minutes, she’ll wind herself down. And then, before we go to bed, obviously, we unlock it.’
The comedian and wife Kristen tied the knot in 2013.
