David Peterson likely to start NLDS Game 1 for Mets after closing wild-card thriller

David Peterson could go from the Game 3 closer to the Game 1 starter.

Hours after recording the final three outs of the Mets’ thrilling Game 3 win over the Brewers in Milwaukee, Peterson emerged as the likely option to start Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday against the Phillies, The Post’s Mike Puma reported.

It was initially thought Tylor Megill was best positioned to start the series opener, but instead, Carlos Mendoza is likely to rely on one of the up-and-coming pieces of his rotation — with Peterson collecting a 2.90 ERA across 21 starts, down from 5.03 in 21 last year.

He delivered seven shoutout, one-hit innings against the Brewers on Sunday, allowing the Mets to keep a mostly fresh bullpen for their doubleheader the next day against the Braves with a playoff spot on the line.

“I’m trying to go as long as I can no matter what,” Peterson told reporters after the game. “Just trying to give the team everything I had.”

And now, he’ll get a chance to face the Phillies for a third time this season — allowing six runs, with five earned, in 11 ⅓ innings during a pair of starts against them in September.
