Dave Portnoy feels bad for ‘sideshow’ Lakers being ‘held ‘hostage’ by LeBron James

The state of the Lakers has one prominent Celtics fan actually feeling bad for the Los Angeles franchise.

Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy took to X after the Lakers selected LeBron James’ son, Bronny, with the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

This came after former Warriors executive and current ESPN analyst Bob Myers said on the network’s draft coverage that LeBron and Bronny’s agent, Rich Paul, warned teams that if they took the son of the NBA superstar he would instead play basketball in Australia.

Amid all the drama and eventual Lakers draft pick of Bronny, Portnoy posted an “emergency press conference” video to X with the caption: “I Actually Feel Bad For Laker Fans Being Held Hostage By Bron Bron.”

Portnoy went on to say that while he has “nothing against” Bronny, the USC product, he does think Lakers fans should be furious.

“But if you were a Lakers fan — I miss the rivalries. I’m being serious. How infuriated are you?” he asked in his video. “Like, your team has been a joke. You can’t compete. You haven’t been good. And LeBron, I love the guy, but he’s turned this into an absolute sideshow.”

Portnoy went on to detail the latest goings of the Lakers, which not only includes the pick of Bronny but also the recent hiring of 15-year NBA veteran JJ Redick as the team’s newest head coach.

Redick, who just finished working as an analyst for ESPN, also hosted the “Mind The Game” podcast this past season with the elder James.

The new bench boss said that the podcast will be ending now that he has coaching duties that include overseeing his now-former co-host.

“But imagine being a Lakers fan and LeBron’s running a franchise,” Portnoy said. “He’s got his podcast host as a coach, he’s got his son playing the point, man!”

The Barstool Sports head did not seem convinced the Lakers have what it takes to reach the NBA Finals in the near future.

“Sorry, LA, love to see you in the Finals one year,” he concluded.
