An Australian finance company said it has had the data of over 300,000 customers stolen in a “sophisticated and malicious cyberattack”.

Latitude Financial, which offers loans credit cards and insurance, says more than 100,000 copies of customers’ IDs plus 225,000 customer records were stolen in the hack.

Of the 103,000 documents stolen, around 97 per cent are copies of customers’ driver’s licences.

In a statement to the ASX, the firm said a “major vendor used by Latitude” was targeted in the attack.

“The attacker was able to obtain Latitude employee login credentials before the incident was isolated,” it said.

“The attacker appears to have used the employee login credentials to steal personal information that was held by two other service providers.

“Latitude apologises to the impacted customers and is taking immediate steps to contact them.”

It said it is working with authorities, including the police and the Australian Cyber Security Centre to investigate.

It said it has removed access to some customer-facing systems, with the firm’s contact centre unavailable according to its website.

Latitude Financial offers interest-free instalment plans and personal loans for shoppers at firms such as Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys and David Jones.
