Last year, “Star Wars” fans were happy to hear that “Lost” creator Damon Lindelof was penning a script for a “Star Wars” movie alongside “The Strain” writer Justin Britt-Gibson.
“The Leftovers” creator was working with screenwriter Justin Britt-Gibson to create the first film that would take place after 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker.” This movie will still be directed by “Ms. Marvel” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and will begin filming around February 2024.
This new movie will feature Daisy Ridley rebuilding the Jedi Order fifteen years after the fall of the First Order and is possibly slated for a December 2025 release, as an untitled “Star Wars” film currently occupies that slot on Disney’s release calendar.
In an April 2023 interview with Variety, Lindelof admitted that working on his “Star Wars” script with Britt-Gibson was a “labor of love.” He said that “the movie is still happening” but “unfortunately not with me,” which makes it seem like his script is being rewritten completely to take the film in a new direction.
However, it seems that Lindelof has no bad blood for Lucasfilm, which is notorious for firing writers and directors in projects in development. “I wish them all the best of luck,” he said. “Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is an incredible director, and I can’t wait to see what she comes up with.”
Damon Lindelof Cast Doubt On His ‘Star Wars’ Involvement At SXSW Last Month
In early March, at SXSW, Lindelof seemed to cast doubt on the possibility of his “Star Wars” filming happening at all in an interview with SlashFilm. “I will just say, that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high,” he said. “If it can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist.”

“That’s all I’ll say, because I have the same association with it as you do, which is, it’s the first movie I saw sitting in my dad’s lap, four years old, May of ’77,” he continued. “I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem, you start to get in the kitchen and you just go, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.’ We’ll just leave it at that point.”
Although he will no longer be involved in a galaxy far, far away, he will be leading the production of a science-fiction drama series for Peacock called “Mrs. Davis,” which is scheduled to premiere on April 20. In addition, he is also collaborating with “The Batman” director Matt Reeves to create a new series called “The Human Condition,” which focuses on a young doctor who must learn how to treat fictional illnesses.
Kathleen Kennedy Shares New Details About Daisy Ridley’s ‘Star Wars’ Films
The news that Daisy Ridley would reprise her role as Rey was announced at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration event in London earlier this month. Shortly after, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy sat down with Entertainment Weekly to share some more details about the new movie.
“As we move into the future space — this story is about 15 years outside of The Rise of Skywalker — obviously we realized post-war, post–First Order rise of the New Jedi Order, we left episode 9 with Rey making a commitment to Luke Skywalker that she would rebuild the Jedi Order,” Kennedy said.
“And so here we are — we’re ready to do that. And it took a lot of discussion because obviously we’ve been developing stories in different spaces, and television has been a big focus of our attention right now,” she continued. “But there’s still so much interest in what happens after The Rise of Skywalker. So we’re excited to be doing that.”
Although only Daisy Ridley is the only sequel trilogy character that has been confirmed to return, Kennedy admitted, “It’s entirely possible to see some people come back.”
