A father has been charged with criminal neglect after his three-month-old daughter suffered permanent brain damage in Adelaide.

The child was admitted to hospital with severe life-threatening injuries on October 13.

She remained in hospital for six weeks and has sustained significant and permanent brain damage, police said.

The South Australian Police Northern District Child and Family Investigation Section and Major Crime Investigation Branch began investigating.

The 34-year-old father was arrested today from Mawson Lakes and charged with aggravated assault causing serious harm with intent and criminal neglect.

He has been refused bail and will appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court tomorrow.
