A cyclist is dead and police say a man has handed himself in after an alleged hit-and-run in Melbourne’s south-east.

Passersby found the cyclist’s body on the side of the road in Bangholme, between Dandenong and Frankston, about 6am today.

Police said a 37-year-old Cranbourne East man handed himself in later this morning.

They allege the driver fled after hitting the cyclist with a vehicle on Frankston-Dandenong Road, north of Thompsons Road.

The man was still in custody this morning but had not been charged.

Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are trying to figure out the time of the collision.
