The New York Post published a story this morning in which former employees of Rep. Jasmine Crockett describe her as a horrible boss who barely shows up at the office but terrifies staffers when she does.
Crockett is not often found at her government-provided suite in the Longworth House Office Building, with one insider saying she prefers to work from her nearby luxury apartment building, sometimes for weeks on end.
“She is laying around her apartment, won’t come into the office, and is really just indifferent to staff and will scream at them,” the former aide said.
“She is never in the office and is very disengaged. She does her bulls— that goes viral, and then freaks out over the most random things.”…
“She is focused almost exclusively on being an influencer, not a member of Congress,” said a third source who has worked with Crockett, describing her as “all diva, no wow.”
The Post reports there might have been more sources than the three included in the story but some people the spoke to expressed fear of retribution and declined to speak even anonymously. In any case, when she’s not calling the president a “piece of s***” Crockett apparently is shouting at her own employees.
On one occasion described to The Post, Crockett reduced a legislative aide to tears, bellowing: “Do you really want to be here? And if not, you can leave!”
And despite her profile as an outspoken black legislator, black staffers aren’t eager to work for her.
“You would think working for a black woman, if you were a young black woman or a young person of color, you would feel empowered in that space,” said a former Democratic congressional aide.
“But truly, the only person that she thinks about and cares about is herself.
What’s striking is how similar this sounds to stories about Kamala Harris who also burned through staffers at a furious rate. Remember this story from 2021?
While much of the ire is aimed at Harris’ chief, two administration officials said the VP herself also bears responsibility for the way her office is run. “It all starts at the top,” said one of the administration officials, who like others requested anonymity to be able to speak candidly about a sensitive matter.
“People are thrown under the bus from the very top, there are short fuses and it’s an abusive environment,” said another person with direct knowledge of how Harris’ office is run. “It’s not a healthy environment and people often feel mistreated. It’s not a place where people feel supported but a place where people feel treated like s—.”…
Harris’ staff struggles are nothing new. People who have worked for her in the past describe days as “managed chaos.” “The boss’ expectations won’t always be predictable,” said one former Harris Senate aide.
Subsequently there was a book which revived claims that Harris created a toxic work environment.
Former aides to Vice President Kamala Harris say she is possessed by “deep, deep insecurity” that has led to a toxic work environment in her office, a forthcoming book claims.
Author Chris Whipple writes in “The Fight of His Life” that Harris refused to answer questions about “turmoil and morale problems” among her staff for his book on President Biden’s first months in the White House, but ex-employees described the woman a heartbeat from the Oval Office as dysfunctional and unprepared.
It sounds like Harris and Crockett have a lot in common as leaders. It obviously didn’t hold Harris back very much so it probably won’t matter in Crockett’s career either. So long as she can keep tossing red meat to Democrats she’ll be fine.
