Rescuers have been searching for Aguaviva for the past week after he disappeared from the bulk carrier while travelling on international waters.

The Philippines Coast Guard is leading the search and rescue mission.

In a statement, Rio Tinto chief executive Jakob Stausholm said the company is supporting the missing man’s family.

“Our thoughts are with Gel’s family, friends and colleagues, and we stand with everyone affected by this distressing situation. We are focused on offering all possible support during this difficult time,” Stausholm said.

“We would like to thank everyone involved in the search for their tireless efforts.”

Aguaviva went missing when the RTM Zheng He was travelling on international waters near the Philippines.

Rio Tinto said it is cooperating with authorities and the ship’s manager as Aguaviva’s disappearance is investigated.

The company said it is also conducting its own internal investigation.
