A knifeman serving decades behind bars for killing a young sex worker faces more time locked up after becoming a ‘problem child’ in Australia’s toughest prison.
Mert Ney, 26, fronted Wollongong Local Court last week to face three charges related to his alleged uncontrollable behaviour at Goulburn Supermax in the NSW southern tablelands.
He has allegedly been involved in more than two dozen incidents involving prison officers or inmates inside the high risk management wing of the supermaximum security prison.
Having previously been charged for three incidents behind bars since he was sentenced over a fatal stabbing rampage in Sydney’s CBD in 2019, Ney is accused of damaging property, assault and possessing a weapon in jail, the Daily Telegraph reported.
He is accused of destroying a light switch, Powerpoint and five perspex sheets between July and August 2024, according to court documents.
Ney has pleaded not guilty to destroying property. The matter will return to court in July.
He previously pleaded not guilty to assaulting a law enforcement officer, being armed with the intent to commit an indictable offence and possessing a weapon in jail during a hearing at Goulburn Local Court in January.
The third matter will be heard in Goulburn Local Court in March and relates to the alleged assault of a law officer earlier this year.

Ney was sentenced to a non-parole period of 36 years, which was later successfully reduced to 33 years, in May 2021 after murdering Michaela Dunn, 24, in August, 2019.
He stabbed Ms Dunn to death in a Clarence Street apartment before fleeing to the street and stabbing a second woman, who survived.
His crazed spree only came to an end when members of the public intervened and held Ney down with a chair and milk crate.
Supreme Court Justice Peter Johnson at the time described Ney’s crimes as a ‘cruel, brutal and terrifying attack made for no reason’.
Disturbing videos during the attack showed him covered in blood, as well as his victim.

‘I’m f***ing psycho,’ he wrote after sending an acquaintance the short clip.
‘I was laughing bro. The fear.’
Ney’s behavioural issues in jail began just months after he was sentenced.
In October 2021, he was handed an extra 15 months behind bars for assaulting a corrections officer.
Another 12 months were added to his sentence for setting his cell on fire.
In February 2023, Ney was served even more jail time after throwing boiling water on another inmate – resulting in an additional 15 months of prison.
