A young couple returning from holiday were forced to sit with a stranger’s vomit splashed underneath their seats during a stomach-churning six-hour flight.

James McNeill and his girlfriend Ciara Scott boarded the Jetstar flight from Bali back to Melbourne this month, when they were forced to endure the stench of the ‘disgusting’ mess.

The pair claimed airline staff told them ‘there was nowhere to move us to’ before they were given wipes to clean it up themselves.

Ms Scott told Daily Mail Australia the couple have asked Jetstar for a refund of the $1,800 they spent on tickets after the horror ordeal.

‘Jetstar have contacted us [on Thursday] and are in the process of making a decision on what compensation to offer us within 24hrs,’ she said.

Mr McNeill said the first thing he and his girlfriend noticed when they approached their cabin seats was a putrid smell.

‘We got on the plane and arrived at our seats to find a smell, the people in the row in front of us were pretty aware of it as well,’ Mr McNeill told the Herald Sun.

‘As we went to sit in our seats my partner noticed vomit on the cabin wall and on my tray table as well as hers. We looked down and noticed a lot of vomit on the carpet below the seats.

‘[Airline staff] said there was nowhere to move us to … it was disappointing and disgusting.’

The couple were given wipes to clean up the mess themselves, which they said they rejected at first, insisting for a cleaner to come and deal with it.

But after one came and went the seats still had some residue left so the pair opted to clean up the rest of the vomit, asking staff for more wipes.

Both travellers said despite their great Bali holiday, the sickening ordeal in the cabin led them to feel ill for ‘a couple of days’ afterwards.

Mr McNeil asked why Jetstar allowed the flight to go ahead despite the hygiene requirements airlines have been enforcing.

He sent a complaint to the company but received no reply for several days until the they were sent a ‘generic’ response apologising for the untidy seats and offered them a $50 voucher.

He described the response from the airline as ‘pretty average’.

The traveller said he and his partner were lucky they were young as it would have been awful if it had happened to an elderly passenger.

A Jetstar spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia the airline regretted the incident.

‘We’re really sorry for the disappointing experience Mr McNeil and his partner had on their recent flight from Bali to Melbourne and know this situation could have been handled better,’ they said.

‘We always want our customers to have a comfortable and enjoyable flight with us and as part of our investigation, we’re speaking to the couple to better understand their experience.’
