Police are searching for a prisoner accidentally released from a Sydney prison as correctional services authorities try to work out what went wrong.

Corey Hastings, 30, left the Long Bay Correctional Complex in Matraville about 1pm today in what Corrective Services NSW blamed on an “administration error”.

Police said an extensive search was launched to find the man, who was thought to have last been seen at a shopping centre in Eastgardens just before 3pm.

Hastings, who was on remand on dangerous driving and other related charges, was listed for a mention in Wagga Wagga District Court this morning.

It’s understood he appeared via video link, not in person.

Officers released a photo of the man and appealed for the public to help find him but warned people not to approach him.

Hastings was described as Caucasian in appearance and 192 centimetres tall with a heavy build and red or auburn hair.

He was last seen wearing a white T-shirt with stripes and may have been travelling by public transport.

A Corrective Services NSW spokesperson said the agency was investigating how the release error happened.

“CSNSW staff are required to follow detailed procedures when processing inmate detention, sentencing decisions and releases from custody,” they said.

“The release was due to an administration error following a court appearance.”
