A police chase ended when a Ford Falcon crashed into a power pole at Canley Vale

A man and woman are fighting for life after their car slammed into a telegraph pole during an alleged police pursuit.

Officers attempted to stop the unregistered vehicle on McBurney Road in Cabramatta in Sydney’s south-west about 7.20pm on Thursday.

A pursuit was initiated after the driver allegedly failed to stop.

The chase continued for several kilometres until the driver of Ford Falcon lost control and crashed into a power pole on Railway Parade in the neighbouring suburb of Canley Vale.

The male driver, 33, and his female passenger, 34, were treated by paramedics at the scene and rushed to Liverpool Hospital in critical conditions.

Confronting photos from the crash scene showed the car wrapped around a power pole.

Paramedics provided lifesaving treatment to the visibly injured pair trapped inside the badly damaged Ford Falcon with the assistance of firefighters.

One patient was intubated as they were lifted onto a stretcher.

The roof and side doors of the vehicle had to be removed to treat the injured occupants, leaving the car’s interior entirely exposed.

Shocked bystanders watched on from behind the cordoned-off site near the busy intersection as specialist crash investigation officers established a crime scene.

Railway Parade, the main thoroughfare between Cabramatta and Canley Vale was closed for several hours as officers examined the crash scene.

A critical incident investigation team from the Campbelltown command will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Professional Standards Commission will conduct an independent review of the investigation with oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Anyone with information, CTTV or dashcam is urged to call Crime Stoppers.

The crash occurred hours before the Anzac Day weekend, where double demerits are now in force until midnight Monday.
