A child has been tragically killed after being hit by a car while walking to school in a regional Victorian town this morning.

Police believe the boy was walking along Bannockburn-Shelford Road in Teesdale when the incident occurred just after 8am.

CPR was performed at the scene, but the child died from his injuries.

Police allege the vehicle involved in the incident fled the scene but was later located at an address in Teesdale.

The female driver is now assisting police in determining the exact circumstances of the crash.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are on their way to the scene.

Teesdale is a town located in the Golden Plains Shire, 34 kilometres west of Geelong.
