A child is dead and five others, including another child who is fighting for life, have been rushed to hospita, after a head-on collision west of Geelong.

The crash occurred when two vehicles collided on the Hamilton Highway in Stonehaven about 9pm yesterday.

Police said a child was declared dead at the scene.

The three other occupants in the same vehicle were all taken to hospital, including a child with life-threatening injuries and a man and woman with serious injuries.

A further two men from the second vehicle were also taken to hospital, one with life-threatening injuries and one with minor injuries.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision.
