As heir to the throne, Charles was declared Britain’s new monarch following his mother’s death in September.

But today’s the day he is formally crowned in a symbolic coming together of the monarchy, church and state for a religious ritual during which the monarch makes vows to both God and country.

Buckingham Palace says the coronation “will reflect the monarch’s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry”.

There will be a procession from Buckingham Palace at 7.20pm AEST (10.20am local time) as Charles and Camilla, the Queen Consort, head to Westminster Abbey in an Australian-built Diamond Jubilee State Coach.

The main formalities begin at 8pm AEST with a ceremony conducted by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

The King is expected to be crowned about 9pm.

Following the service, the King and Queen will ride back to Buckingham Palace in the historic Gold State Coach.

At about 11.30pm, the King and Queen will be joined by members of the royal family to greet crowds from the balcony, wave to spectators and watch a military flyover.
