A herd of more than 100 cows has been filmed taking over front yards and major roads in Melbourne‘s south after escaping a farm overnight.

Droves of cows, that had split up into groups, roamed the streets of Pakenham after escaping a property on Tommuc Valley Road just before 4am today.

It took police four hours to round up the herd, finally putting an end to the chaos around 8.30am.

The cows were spotted by local residents wandering through housing estates, sitting in front yards and even running along the highway in the dark this morning.

Two men filmed the cows during their great escape on a major road.

The video showed the herd taking up an entire lane, with dozens running towards town.

“F—, someone’s left the gate open or something,” one of the men was heard saying.

“They’re all heading into town – they’re worse than cyclists.”

Police said the more than 100 cows had split up into groups and were spotted wandering around neighbouring streets.

Some cows found refuge in people’s front gardens, while others ran from police cars.

The cows were corralled into public land by police on Tamar and David Streets, just before peak hour hit.
