Former NFL quarterback Chad Henne said he turned down an opportunity to join the Jets following Aaron Rodgers going down in the season opener with a torn Achilles tendon.
Henne made the admission to the Reading Eagle in Pennsylvania.
The 38-year-old, who spends his days as a volunteer assistant coach at Wilson High School in Reading, Pa., said he was excited to receive a contract offer, but decided to pass on the deal.
“I hung them up for the right reasons,” Henne said. “I didn’t want to go back and put my body into it.”
Henne retired after winning his second Super Bowl title with the Chiefs, backing up Patrick Mahomes as Kansas City beat the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-35, in February.
Henne spent 15 seasons in the NFL, beginning in 2008 with the Miami Dolphins, who selected him in the second round of that year’s draft.

He later played for the Jaguars, starting a career-high 13 games in 2013.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh has been quite insistent that the team is ready to move forward with Zach Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Of course, that was before Wilson went out last week and played a clunker, throwing three interceptions in the 30-10 loss to the Cowboys.
The Jets’ quarterback depth chart is thin, with Tim Boyle backing up Wilson, so Henne would’ve provided some veteran guidance, much like Rodgers was doing before his likely season-ending injury.

Wilson gets another chance to shine on Sunday when the New England Patriots visit MetLife Stadium.
If Wilson, who’s lost all three starts in his career to the Patriots, comes up small again in Week 3, more questions about adding talent at quarterback seem to be a given.
