Celtics deal Grant Williams to Mavericks in three-team sign-and-trade

Grant Williams has a new home.

The Celtics are trading Williams to the Mavericks in a three-team sign-and-trade deal that routes Reggie Bullock and draft capital to the Spurs, while Boston will net two second-round picks, according to multiple reports.

Williams, a restricted free agent, agreed to a four-year, $53 million deal to help make the trade to Dallas happen, per ESPN.

Dallas is also securing two second-round picks in the move, and the Spurs are acquiring an unprotected Mavericks pick-swap in 2030.

ESPN reported that the Celtics will also get a $6.2 million trade exception.

Williams, a 6-foot-6 forward drafted in the first round by the Celtics in 2019, emerged as a consistent contributor for Boston throughout multiple playoff runs, playing staunch defense and averaging 8.0 points on 39 percent 3-point shooting last year.

Boston made the playoffs every year of Williams’ tenure, including three trips to the Eastern Conference finals.

The forward averaged at least 10 minutes per game in all four of those playoff runs.

With a decision to make about a Jaylen Brown contract extension looming, the Celtics are opting to take their frontcourt group in a different direction, having traded Marcus Smart to acquire Kristaps Porzingis in June.

The Mavericks have been active in free agency this offseason, re-signing mercurial star guard Kyrie Irving and bolstering their rotation by signing Seth Curry, as well as reportedly offering a contract to restricted free agent Matisse Thybulle.

Dallas, which missed the playoffs last season for the first time since superstar Luka Doncic’s rookie year, intends to build a contender around he and Irving after the group flamed out last year following its acquisition of the former Nets guard.

Reggie Bullock
Reggie Bullock is a journeyman 3-point shooter.

The Mavericks went 9-18 after Irving’s arrival last year and missed the playoffs.

San Antonio, which drafted generational prospect Victor Wembanyama in June, will get Bullock, a veteran forward who has shot 38 percent on 3-pointers over his 10-year career.

Bullock heads to the Spurs after two years with the Knicks and two years with the Mavericks.
