Celtics’ Brad Stevens opens up about swirling Indiana coaching rumors

Brad Stevens says he isn’t going anywhere.

Over the past week, rumors have started on social media that Stevens, the Celtics’ president of basketball operations, could be replacing Mike Woodson as Indiana University’s head basketball coach.

Indiana announced on Feb. 7 that Woodson will be stepping down following the 2024-25 season.

Stevens, however, has since denied the discourse, saying that he his fine with his current situation with the Celtics.

“I thoroughly appreciate being a Celtic and love the people I get to work with every day,” Stevens told The Field of 68 on Friday.

The 48-year-old Stevens, who helped Boston build a title winner last year, has previously coached college basketball in the state of Indiana.

He was at the helm for Butler University from 2007-2013, and during his tenure, Stevens led the program to two consecutive NCAA national championship games (2010, 2011), along with three Horizon League tournament titles, winning the league’s coach of the year award in 2009 and 2010.

Stevens then coached the Celtics for eight years, leading the team to seven straight playoff appearances from 2014-2021, reaching the Eastern Conference Finals three times in that span.

Stevens was ultimately named as the Celtics’ president of basketball operations in June 2021, and saw his team win their first championship since 2008 last season.
