The man awoke just after 6am as two intruders jumped a fence and tried to break into the Malvern East home through the back door.
He confronted them and chased them away, before they sprinted towards the front door in a second attempt to get into the home.
CCTV from the home shows the man yelling at the hooded offenders and pushing them away from the front door.
The group may be connected to five other aggravated home invasions in Malvern East, Armadale and Hawthorn East between 4.30am and 6am, according to police.
In each case, the thieves confronted the home’s occupants, including in Armadale where two people broke into a home and awoke a mother, who was sleeping along with her six-year-old son.
9News understands the thieves demanded the keys to her Maserati and ransacked the home before leaving in the car.
In one of two home invasions in Hawthorn East, the thieves demanded car keys from a father and took his Mercedes Benz, which was located by police late this afternoon.
The offenders remain on the run.
