A 15-year-old boy has spoken of the moment strangers broke into his Melbourne home and held a gun to his father’s head in a horrifying case of mistaken identity.

The family-of-four had only moved into the Hillside home in Melbourne’s north-west days earlier when two young men leapt a fence and smashed their way in about 2am on December 30.

Aarav Nagpal’s dad was woken by the disturbance and confronted one of the men, who was standing in the hallway holding a gun.

“I was pretty much fine, sleeping through most of it, but Mum was pretty scared,” the 15-year-old told 9News.

His 50-year-old dad then opened the front door to the home, where another male held a gun to his head and made threats.

Police believe the pair then realised they had targeted the wrong residents, and quickly fled with three others, who were waiting in two getaway cars.

Three months on from the botched attack, police are yet to make any arrests and have appealed to the public for assistance in finding those responsible.

CCTV vision of a white smart car and a silver sedan, which were seen in the area in the minutes surrounding the incident, have been released, along with images of two males they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

“Nothing stolen on this occasion, however quite terrifying for occupants of the home honest hardworking family had the right to feel safe,” senior constable Sean Armstrong said.

“These villains enter your home wielding firearms its completely unacceptable and its blatant we will pursue every angle we can to hold these offenders to account.”

Police believe this was a case of mistaken identity and the intruders may have been after someone who used to live at this home.
