Forensics were seen photographing the shooting victim's bloodied body on Thursday

A man in his 20s with distinctive tattoos has been shot dead in Sydney overnight in what police fear is the latest targeted attack in an escalating gang war – as witnesses reveal grisly details from the scene of the violent shooting.

The 28-year-old man was found with several gunshot wounds on Broughton Street in Canterbury, south west Sydney, at about 2am on Thursday morning.

The victim, who is yet to be formally identified, was treated by paramedics for gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen but died at the scene.

An abandoned vape lay in the road near the body of the man who was clad in grey track pants and white runners.

A burnt-out white hatchback was found on Beaconsfield Avenue in nearby Kingsgrove, in south Sydney, shortly after the ‘targeted’ shooting.

Police will probe whether the victim had links to drug supply and if he had plans to meet up with two men when he was shot dead, police sources have revealed.

Resident Chani described waking up and hearing a round of gunshots from the execution murder before racing to check on his children.

‘I heard boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. It was coming from the middle of the street,’ she told Daily Mail Australia.

‘I don’t know if he was out there walking or whatever but they got him in the open.

‘I got up straight away to see where my kids were. Sometimes they get up in the middle of the night and go to Canterbury Kebabs, so I was worried.

‘I’m still shaken. It was scary. His body’s still lying there while they do whatever, the forensics I guess.’

Another neighbour said she heard ‘seven or eight gunshots’ and then the ‘screech of tyres on the road… a car taking off’.

The young woman said she and her partner were woken by the sounds and ‘immediately’ knew it was gunfire.

‘He rang the cops but they were already on the way,’ she said.

Neighbour Carlo said he was about to leave home for the local pub just before 2am when he heard ‘pop, pop, pop, pop, pop’.

‘And then the sirens and lights came and I couldn’t get up there. It’s open till 4am normally,’ he recalled.

Carlo said the corner where the shooting happened was ‘known for drug deals’.

Kon, the first person to call police about the shooting, said he heard five shots at 1.57am and when he called the cops they had been unaware, but rang him back minutes later to say ‘it’s a fatality’.

‘I know guns, I play with guns, it was a pistol,’ said Kon, who lives 700m away.

‘I didn’t dial 000, I called the LAC at Ashfield straight up. They called me back at 2.01am to say he was dead.’

The 28-year-old shooting victim had multiple tattoos, including a ‘sleeve’ on his right arm and leg tattoos.

His chest and torso were heavily inked with designs including a distinctive tattoo of a helicopter hovering above a structure which could be a prison yard or village.

NSW Police said the shooting was ‘believed to be a targeted incident’.

It comes just hours after leading criminal defence lawyer Mahmoud Abbas was shot in his driveway in Greenacre at about 10.30am on Wednesday morning.

The first incident occurred just a 10 minute drive from the second shooting.

Daily Mail Australia is not suggesting the two incidents are linked.

Mr Abbas was shot in the right leg and stomach outside his home on Narelle Crescent and was treated at the scene by paramedics.

He was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

NSW Police believe the shooting was targeted.

The shooting occurred on the same street where underworld figure Mahmoud ‘Brownie’ Ahmad was shot dead while visiting an associate in April 2022.

It comes just days after three people were shot in an industrial area in Greenacre at 2.15am on Sunday, with one man requiring life support.

NSW Police are expected to announce a new taskforce to investigate the shootings after five people were shot across the city in as many days.
