Caleb Williams ‘likes’ post saying Bears shouldn’t draft him

Reading social media tea leaves, it seems as though Caleb Williams might not want to be a Chicago Bear.

On Christmas Eve, an X user with the handle @spennyschaum22 sent a tweet indicating that the Bears should not select Williams in the 2024 NFL Draft, and the tweet was ‘liked’ by Williams himself.

“Only one option for the @ChicagoBears in the 2024 @NFL draft. It’s not @CALEBcsw, we want @justnfields,” the tweet read.

“The answer is @MarvHarrisonJr.”

Marvin Harrison Jr., the son of legendary former Colts wideout Marvin Harrison, had an exemplary season for Ohio State.

Beyond their own first-round pick, the Bears also have the Panthers’ top pick from their swap before the 2023 NFL Draft in which Carolina moved up to select Bryce Young first overall.

If the season ended today, Carolina would have “earned” the first overall pick, as their 2-13 record is the worst in the league.

Williams, the quarterback at USC, has been the presumptive No. 1 overall pick all season, although there have started to be some voices who prefer North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye.

While public figures have plausible deniability on whether their likes amount to endorsements, Williams’ has been up for two days and he hasn’t spoken up to say something tantamount to the idea that he would be thrilled to go to whichever franchise selects him in the draft.

Perhaps problematically for Williams, the other team that is closest to the Panthers for first overall pick is the 3-12 Cardinals, and there were rumors earlier this season that Williams might not want Arizona as his NFL destination.

“The way the system is constructed, you go to the worst possible situation,” Williams’ father, Carl Williams, previously told GQ.com.

“The worst possible team, the worst organization in the league — because of their desire for parity — gets the first pick. So it’s the gift and the curse. I mean, I’ve talked to Archie Manning — his career was shot because he went to a horrible organization. I’ve talked to Lincoln [Riley], and Kyler [Murray] struggled because of where he was drafted. Baker [Mayfield] struggled mightily because of where he was drafted.

“The organizations matter. He’s got two shots at the apple. So if there’s not a good situation, the truth is, he can come back to school.”
