Quarterback Caleb Williams was brought to tears Thursday over a surprise message he received from his mother after being selected first overall by the Bears in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Dayne Price joked that her son — who garnered attention for his emotional responses and vulnerability in interviews while at USC — “must’ve got that crying from me” while appearing in a heartfelt video shared by the NFL on social media.
“But continue to be your authentic self,” Price said, in part. “At eight months you began to run and as we watch you today you haven’t stopped running. To make those touchdowns and scramble around to get that ball out, [I] continue to see you live out your childhood dream today.”
“I love the way you have moved through life. Around 10 having a vision, wanting something for yourself and us being here today — your vision was you wanted to be an NFL player and here we are…”
It didn’t take long before Williams started crying as he sent a tearful message back to his mother, whom he called his best friend.
“I remember the times when I made the decision that this was going to be what I wanted to do for the rest of my life,” Williams said. “There were some tough mornings and evenings and she was always — I let out a few tears because there were days I didn’t want to do it, days I didn’t want to get up and she’s just been there to support me, been there for me.
“She’s not into all the Ra Ra, she doesn’t care about it. She just wants to see me enjoy so it’s pretty special. She’s a wonderful lady, my best friend, other than now, my girlfriend [Alina Thyregod],” Williams said, laughing. “She’s great, I love her and we got another long time coming because these next many many many many moons, so I love you and yeah let’s do it.
“I love you, mom. Thanks for everything you’ve done for me and how much you’ve supported me ever over time — the time, energy and effort dropping me off at Titans practices when you’re trying to work two jobs. I love you. Sweet. Now I’m going to celebrate with my family and have red eyes!”
The NFL rookie sported a Bears hat and a pin on his suit during the emotional moment.
Williams nearly broke the internet Thursday when he and his girlfriend, Alina Thyregod, made their red carpet debut at the 2024 NFL Draft, which is taking place in Detroit from through April 27.
The 22-year-old Williams was seen leaving his hotel with his girlfriend and his mother on each arm.
He then posed for photos with the pair before they sat together and played cards in the green room at the draft.
Prior to the draft, Williams teased that his look for the big night would match his girlfriend’s dress.
Williams wore a custom navy suit by Chrome Hearts that featured silver details and Thyregod looked stunning in a silver dress.
