A 20-year-old Cairns woman has been charged with attempted murder after she allegedly stabbed another woman, leaving her seriously wounded.

Police responded to reports of an assault at The Esplanade at 5.30pm yesterday evening, where they allegedly found a 39-year-old woman with a stab wound to her neck.

The woman was rushed to hospital with cuts to her throat and is this morning understood to still be in a critical condition at Cairns Hospital.

The 20-year-old woman was taken into custody at the scene.

She is due to appear before Cairns Magistrates Court today.
