Eight people have been rushed to hospital after a teenage driver doing burnouts allegedly crashed into a parked car near Cessnock in NSW

Two young children have been seriously hurt and another five onlookers injured in a burnout gone wrong at an illegal street race gathering.

The 18-year-old driver lost control while performing the burnout in front of a crowd at Abermain, west of Newcastle in the NSW Hunter Valley, just after midnight on Sunday.

The P-plater’s Subaru Liberty smashed into a parked vehicle which then struck seven onlookers, including a five-year-old and a six-year-old. 

Witnesses said the  driver of a Subaru sedan was allegedly travelling at approximately 100 km/h when he attempted a burnout and handbrake turn, before he lost control of the vehicle.

The children were treated by paramedics at the scene and rushed to hospital with serious injuries. 

The driver, an 18-year-old man, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital for further assessment, where he remains under police guard.

Two children, aged five and six, were treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics before being taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Five other adults were also injured and taken to hospital for further treatment.
