A horror crash on the Bruce Highway has killed a 13-year-old boy and 40-year-old woman.

Police believe a semi-trailer travelling south struck the back of two utes near the intersection of Ragland Station Road in the Gladstone region, Central Queensland, about 11.11pm on Tuesday.

The highway was closed in both directions as the Forensic Crash Unit investigates the circumstances of the collision.

The woman and teenage boy, who were travelling in one of the utes, died at the scene.

The driver, a 42-year-old man, and another passenger in that vehicle, a 15-year-old boy, were taken to Rockhampton Base Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver and passenger in the other ute sustained minor injuries.

A detour through the Raglan township is in place for light vehicles.
