Brittany Higgins has lashed out at police who didn’t want to charge Bruce Lehrmann with rape, as it’s revealed an inquiry into the investigation has destroyed the careers of 13 officers.

Ms Higgins reactivated her Instagram account on Wednesday morning, following a brief hiatus amid a defamation lawsuit, to slam Australian Federal Police officers who investigated her allegations against Mr Lehrmann in 2021.

Mr Lehrmann has continually denied raping Ms Higgins in Parliament House in 2019.

She wrote: ‘These police never wanted to charge my [alleged] rapist, despite the fact that no one, not even the defence, made an application contending that the prosecution was not properly commenced.’

‘They were absolutely awful to me. They made me feel violated at every turn.’

Ms Higgins was responding to reports in The Australian overnight, which said a Board of Inquiry – which looked into the way her rape allegations were investigated – caused irreversible reputational and emotional damage to some officers.

The inquiry was sparked by the outgoing Director of Public Prosecutions, Shane Drumgold, who sent a fiery letter to police in November – which wrongly accused investigating officers of being corrupt and conspiring not to charge Mr Lehrmann.

Police conduct was heavily scrutinised to the point where some have left the force altogether, while others have either permanently transferred out of the sex crimes field, are on long-term sick leave, according to the publication.

In her post, Ms Higgins said: ‘I do not celebrate the misfortune of others. However, these officer were disgraced by their conduct, not by the DPP.’

The former Liberal staffer also claimed police made a ‘fun folder full of unfounded claims in a literal attempt to discredit me as a permissible [alleged] rape victim to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions’.

By ‘fun folder’, she was referring to a document put together by Detective Superintendent Scott Moller, now known as the Moller report, which questioned the validity of her allegations.

She continued: ‘I will always remember how small I felt having five senior police officers I’ve never met in a room belittling me – after I had just spent hours giving evidence in a second [evidence in chief] interview.’

‘They case judgements about me and the merits of my advocacy and regularly reiterated the reasons why they thought that I shouldn’t proceed with pressing charges.’

Ms Higgins also brought up the moment detectives ‘handed over my most private thoughts taken over years in counselling sessions at the Rape Crisis Centre to [Mr Lehrmann’s defence lawyers]’.

During the inquiry, police admitted to handing over her private counselling notes to the defence – but said it was an unfortunate error.

The inquiry was sparked by Mr Drumgold, who sent a letter to police in November last year, accusing them of corruption.

The inquiry was chaired by former judge Walter Sofronoff, who found police ‘performed their duties in absolute good faith, with great determination although faced with obstacles, and put together a sound case’.

Daily Mail Australia has approached the AFP for comment.
