Legendary British DJ Fatboy Slim has played to a packed out fish and chip shop in Melbourne’s beachside suburb of St Kilda.
The Praise You DJ hit the decks at Northern Soul Chip Shop about 6.30pm as part of an impromptu free gig.
The Irish chippy reached capacity soon after the business took to Instagram today to announce the surprise show, with dozens of fans squeezing in to watch Slim play a mix of famous tunes on the shop counter.
“I can’t talk now, I’m working, but thank you,” Slim told 9News live on-air.
Slim is currently touring Australia with his Fatboy Slim Loves Australia Tour.
On Sunday he closed out race day at the Australian Grand Prix as the headline act for a three-day live music festival at Albert Park.
Speaking to Today Extra, the Grammy winner revealed he visits Australia regularly.
“The thing I love most about Aussies is their lack of shyness, their willingness to have a party and that suits me just fine.,” he said.
Northern Soul Chip Shop has gained notoriety for its niche menu of British and Irish chip shop classics, including the Spice Bag.
The takeaway shop’s name is a nod to the ’60s underground English music and dance scene, which Slim is known to take inspiration from in his own music.
Real name Norman Cook, Slim is regarded as a pioneer of dance and electronic music and is credited with popularising sub-genres like big beat.
Since adopting the stage name Fatboy Slim in the late 90s, he has become an international success with hits including Rockafeller Skank and Right Here, Right Now.
