The Birthplace of Rock ‘n’ Roll is no stranger to heavy crime.

Memphis saw a staggering 202 homicides in 2024, higher than any other across America, according to the November findings from the Major Cities Chiefs Association Violent Crime Survey. It was only second to Los Angeles, which saw 226 homicides.

Last year Memphis was on par with the City of Angels, both clocking in 249 homicides in 2023, according to the survey. That year, they were only second to Philadelphia, which had an unprecedented 329 homicides.

Even so, Memphis still ranks lower than either in safety on several other factors that platforms like WalletHub use to determine a population’s overall safety.

The Bluff City landed at the very bottom of its safety survey comprised of 182 other cities. It ranked impressively low in categories like home, community, and financial safety on top of the natural disaster risk.

For financial safety, the city ranked second-to-last, only outdone by Detriot, In community and home safety, it was ranked 180th, just barely scraping by New Orleans and Baton Rouge, La.

Its best ranking was in the natural disasters category where it outclassed 81 other cities.

Meanwhile, even cities in New York proved to be safer, according to the surveys.

Yonkers was the 6th safest city on WalletHub’s survey, earning third-safest in home and community, 29th in risk of natural disaster, and 139th in financial safety.

South Burlington, Vt.; Casper, Wy., Warwick, Rhode Island, Burlington, Vt.; and Boise, Idaho were the top five safest cities overall in the survey.
