A body has been found on a property and a massive police operation is underway after gunshots were fired at cars that were driving along a major motorway. 

The incident allegedly occurred on the Pacific Highway on the NSW mid-north coast after multiple shots were fired in the early hours of Thursday morning.   

NSW Police are hunting for a dark colours Mercedes ute which was seen in the major strip.

NSW Police acting Assistant Commissioner Scott Tanner told radio station 2GB th the Mercedes was last seen in Ferbank Creek, near Port Macquarie on the NSW north-coast.

Police said a body was found at a home on Fernbank Creek Road near the Pacific Highway upon a welfare check.
