A corpse discovered in the pond of an exclusive golf course is so badly decomposed that cops are struggling to identify the body

NSW Police were called to the The Lakes Golf Club in Eastlakes, in Sydney’s south  east, after the body was found by a passerby on Wednesday morning.

Officers retrieved the corpse at 12.30pm and are treating the death of the individual as suspicious.

Specialist divers were at the scene retrieving the body from a pond in at The Lakes Golf Course in Sydney this afternoon after a groundsman found the corpse at 9.30am on Wednesday

Specialist officers were seen carrying the body covered in a thick blue tarp sheet as golfers continued on with their game without interruption.

A NSW Police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia investigations are ongoing. 

‘About 9.30am Wednesday 9 August 2023, officers from South Sydney Police Area Command attended a golf course on Wentworth Avenue, Eastlakes, following reports of a concern for welfare,’ he said. 

‘Officers are being assisted by PolAir and the Marine Area Command’. 

The course has since been closed until further notice. 

It’s believed the body was badly decomposed before it was pulled out of the water by police.

Police said the death of the individual is being treated as suspicious but have not provided details of the man's age and the cause of death as officers continue their investigation into the grim discovery

Local member for the Heffron electoral district Ron Hoenig described the incident as a tragedy.   

‘As a proud member of the Lakes, it’s difficult for me to fathom such a terrible event happening at this beautiful and historic grounds,’ Mr Hoenig said.   

‘My heart goes out to the man’s family’.   

The man’s body was first discovered by a groundsman at the course.  

According to the golf club’s website, it is one of Australia’s ‘pre-eminent private clubs and one of the leading major tournament venues in Australia’. 

The prestigious club was established in 1928 and has hosted the Australian Open Golf several times.  

The club is one of the most expensive golf ranges to book with a $40,000 fee for a seven day membership for people aged 40 years and over to use the range. 

The venue also hosts private functions and weddings.
