Anthony Albanese is set to announce Bill Shorten's retirement in a press conference being held at 11am today

Bill Shorten is set to announce his retirement from politics at a press conference in Canberra this morning.

He has served as the member of the Victorian seat of Maribyrnong since 2007 and became the leader of the Labor Party after Kevin Rudd retired in 2013.

Before his election to Parliament, he led the Australian Workers’ Union.

During his time as leader, Shorten led Labor to a narrow loss in the 2016 election and then faced an unexpected defeat in the 2019 election, leading former Liberal prime minister Scott Morrison to describe his surprise victory as a ‘miracle’.

After this loss, he announced his resignation as leader. Anthony Albanese was elected unopposed to succeed him.

Following Labor’s victory at the 2022 election, Shorten was appointed as the Minister for Government Services and the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Although Shorten and Albanese were not political allies, they have had a successful working relationship.
