We might have a good old fashioned quarterback controversy brewing in New England.
Bill Belichick was appearing on the “Greg Hill Show” on WEEI, and declined to commit to Mac Jones being the full-time starter over Bailey Zappe when the former returns from an ankle injury.
Asked if he could foresee a scenario where Zappe remains the starter, Belichick answered, “Yeah, I’m not gonna get into a lot of hypotheticals on all the different things that might or might not happen, and all that. It’s, to me, a waste of time. I’m not gonna sit here and dream up scenarios and all that. We’ll take things as they come, and go from there.”

On one hand, you could say this is typical Belichick, refusing to reveal his cards when he doesn’t have to. On the other, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer points out that Belichick repeatedly declared Cam Newton the starter over Jones leading into last season.
These declarations were made, but then Belichick deviated from them, releasing Newton right before the season began, and naming Jones the starter.

So, reading into Belichick’s public comments can be hazardous.

In any event, Zappe and the Patriots took the Packers to overtime nine days ago at Lambeau Field, and followed that up by decimating the Lions 29-0 on Sunday.
Against the Lions, Zappe completed 17 of 21 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown, with an interception.
Jones, who suffered a high ankle sprain in the Patriots’ Week 3 loss to the Ravens, has struggled with ball security this season, tossing five interceptions in three starts.
The 2-3 Patriots are three-point underdogs in Cleveland on Sunday with Jones’ health status still unclear.
